What is a Palliative Care Consortium?

There are 8 Palliative Care Consortiums in Victoria – who work with palliative care services in their health regions and across the State (the Victorian Palliative Care Network). They are critical to the Victorian health system and play a key role in implementing palliative care policy and effective palliative care service delivery, including quality end-of-life care in community and inpatient settings.

What does a Palliative Care Consortium do?

  • We raise awareness of palliative care across the health services and in the general community. With the message that “death is a part of life” we support training programs for healthcare providers and community groups.
  • We connect palliative care service providers and other health and community services and providers across their regions to build on their palliative care knowledge and expertise.
  • We share our knowledge about improving our specialist palliative care workforce across health regions, and support each other with initiatives and activities to address service and workforce gaps.
  • We Identify opportunities for innovation and work together to implement them.  The Consortium Managers have the flexibility and expertise to work independently on strategies within their regions as well as collaboratively across Victoria.
  • We work with local, regional and statewide services to minimise duplication of projects and resources that use public funds.
